A Chaplain’s Story About Pop Open Cards
Recently a volunteer chaplain shared this story with me.
He used Pop Open Cards with the patients he served. He so often found the verse inside was just what the person needed to hear.
One visit was with a personal friend who was in ICU with life-threatening issues. At the end of the visit, the chaplain pulled out a card and gave it to the friend. The word HOPE was on the cover.
When the patient opened the card part of the verse from Isaiah 43 was highlighted: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God.” Isaiah 43:1-3
The patient shared with the chaplain that he believed the message and God’s caring for him. They prayed together and the chaplain left the card.
Six days later the chaplain received a call from the patient’s wife telling him her husband had died. She wanted the chaplain to have the card her husband found so inspiring and encouraging.
He gladly received it and it has been in his wallet ever since. He often pulls it out and shares the story with people he meets (including inmates at a penitentiary in California).
Each time he shares the gospel story of a God who cares about His people. He told me he has had the opportunity to lead many to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
All because of one Pop Open Card at the right place, at the right time with the right person.
